Combustion

Volumetric heat release from liquid hydrocarbon fuels through combustion remains the highest power density mechanism practicably achievable for power generation, particularly for propulsive needs. However, breakthroughs in our understanding of burning in small volumes, managing the emission from combustion, conversion to electrical power, and, in particular, making small combustion devices compatible with close proximity human use are significant challenges.
