Surface Science

Compact power devices have relatively high surface to volume ratios, and hence power generating reactions (whether electrochemical or strictly thermal) often occur on surfaces. Some applications may demand special fuel processing or reforming that also require catalyzed surface reactions. In some applications, fuel storage via surface adsorption may be desirable. Fundamental surface phenomena are therefore critical.
